Brigham Young was a Mormon preacher who did much to make the faith known in Canada and England, attracting thousands of followers. He succeeded Joseph Smith as leader and following expulsion of the community from Illinois, he headed the drive to Utah which became and has remained the secure home for the faithful and their extended families. His own polygamous life style is well documented, including his tussles with both state and federal authorities; less noticed is the motivation from his faith to establish public utilities in the region – road, rail, and distribution services for farming.
