YODER, John
- Era: 1927 - 1997

- Categories: RELIGION, POLITICS
John Yoder was an American social ethicist with strong Mennonite/Anabaptist roots. Until recently he was best known for his exposition of Christian pacifism which is the direct expression of a radical response to the gospel message of Jesus. Now as a result of documented sexual wrongdoing this scandal is what is most remarked. The question of whether or not that invalidates his moral and religious views is now widely debated. It coincides with the extensive documentation of sexual abuse on the part of senior figures across the world’s religions. This leads some to observe that this exposes the hypocrisy of religions and therefore the world would be better off without all of them. A wiser conclusion may be that there is confirmation here regarding the urgency of more open debate within every world view regarding sexual behaviour and related ethics.
