WOWOKA
- Era: 1856 - 1932
- Location: United States
- Categories: RELIGION, POLITICS
Also known as Jack Wilson, Wowoka was the initiator of Ghost Dance Movement amongst North American Indians. Drawing on personal visions and tribal traditions, his own initiating message was to call for a radically peaceable lifestyle in response to oppression by White people – they faced imminent destruction. Though it was the Sioux who were massacred at Wounded Knee, Wowoka’s message of living a moral life continued to have an appeal in the development of Pan-Indian identity.
