WASHINGTON, George

George Washington was the first President of the USA. Experienced in estate management and the use of arms from his own family background, he had a major leadership role in the military struggle against British domination. His position as Chief Magistrate and President emerged during two years of constitutional discussions 1787-9. Seen by many as ‘a Christian soldier defending rights and liberties’, his status as a moral mentor relies on a mixture of historical and apocryphal. There is evidence that his own character was shaped by his youthful focus on a popular list of 110 Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation.
