Socialist Prime Minister throughout most of the 1948 – 62 period; his political thinking was principally informed by Buddhist beliefs. He understood these as promoting a sense of mutual responsibility across the nation; Buddhism became the state religion. The notion of the state supporting religion was a modern translation of the tradition of the interdependence between king and sangha – the wider community. Following his political overthrow in a coup he first endured 7 years imprisonment and 11 years exile, before settling back in in his homeland as a monk.
