TILLICH, Paul

Paul Tillich spent the first half of his life in Germany, including work as an army chaplain during World War 1, engaging in post-war re-thinking and activity from university positions, and challenging the anti-Jewish momentum. Following loss of university job in 1933, he relocated to New York and for the second half of his life sought to address the challenge of relevance: what genuine contribution can Christianity – or other religions – make to human understanding in a world of increasingly pervasive secular science, culture and politics? He drew on existentialist philosophy, depth psychology and sociology and expressed his thinking in works of systematic theology, student encounter and sermons.
