Hindu reformer, rejecting 'idolatrous' features in traditional culture and favouring social reform whilst reaffirming distinctive Hindu ideas which he expressed in the Brahmo Samaj organisation. He founded the Tattwabodhini Patrika (Truth Seeking News) journal which encouraged debate about issues in contemporary society, stressing the moral and spiritual aspects of personal development and promoted the education of women and the legalisation of widow remarriage.
