From a background in botany and natural science Marie Stopes came to renown as the leading British advocate of birth control and women’s political rights. Although contraception and its techniques were a priority for her, they arose initially from a concern for marital unhappiness and more generally for young people’s understanding of sex. The main focus of critics of the advice centres/clinics founded in her name has shifted from contraception to abortion.
