SCHOPENHAUER, Arthur

Contrary to those who believe that reason and physical experience are the primary determinants in human life, Arthur Schopenhauer believed that wilful striving is more important. Much wilful force is naturally inherited and unconscious and therefore beyond easy control, but it is self-deceiving to ignore it even if it leads more to pessimism than an easy optimism. He was much influenced by Kant, as also by Hindu (via the Vedas) and Buddhist thinking. Empathy is the best resource for ethics and moral education.
