ROMERO, Oscar
- Era: 1917 - 1960
- Location: El Salvador
- Categories: RELIGION, POLITICS
Oscar Romero’s 24 years as a parish priest in El Salvador are described as ‘conservative’ in approach; this fact is said to have qualified him to be made a bishop. Then the direct experience of the shooting of a fellow priest and friend prompted him to take an increasingly outspoken stance on behalf of the voiceless poor and against a strong right-wing military government. In spite of papal direction that he should refrain from this he persisted and was killed whilst leading prayers. Later papal views are more sympathetic and his official recognition as a saint is now in process.
