RANADE, Mahadev

Mahadev Ranade was a lawyer and judge who used his various social positions to campaign for a reformed interpretation of Hindu beliefs and morality, especially caste-based differentials. ‘Change from within’ was the policy which characterises his actions. In respect of India’s belonging to the British Empire he favoured giving priority to home-produced materials. In respect of favouring age of consent rather than child marriage, on his first wife’s death he accepted the tradition of re-marriage to a young girl (she was 12 years old), but then made her education a necessary priority.
