Social anthropologist with a keen interest in the shaping of the individual moral mind. Following undergraduate studies in the 'Moral Sciences' in Cambridge and fieldwork in the Andaman Islands and with Australian tribes, he was successively professorial in S Africa, Australia, USA and the UK. He provided theoretical substance for the notion of co-adaptability, wherein the individual is shaped within the structural principles of human relationships.
