First non-European elected leader of the World Council of Churches, he used his lifetime association with the Council actively to support all aspects of Christian unity and more particularly racial harmony. He was at the forefront of the Programme to Combat Racism, facing the charges from some Europeans that it had the effect of legitimating violence.
