Hungarian born and educated, then lecturing in Natural Sciences in Germany before his Jewish family background led him to emigrate to the UK in 1933. Alongside his continuing academic work in physical chemistry, he engaged in social scientific studies. From these he presented a strong rebuttal of ‘reductionist’ interpretations of human behaviour, arguing instead the personal knowledge is more complex and includes ‘tacit’ sense.
