NIEBUHR, Helmut Richard

Christian ethicist and theologian. Younger brother of the better publicly known Reinhold; the sons of German immigrants to the US. From his PhD interest in the work of Ernst Troeltsch on the Social Teachings of the Christian Churches, he wrestled continually with the challenge of historical relativism, testing the credibility of any faith in a war-torn world. Denominational communities are no substitute for the self acting responsively and responsibly.
