Thomas More was a legally trained Lord Chancellor (senior administrator for church and state) under King Henry VIII. With a reputation for fair-mindedness, he was influenced philosophically and theologically by the thinking and writings of Colet and Erasmus, but remained loyal to Papal authority in spite of pressure from the King – his conscience would not allow him to do otherwise. In consequence he was executed for treason. His writings, including Utopia, reveal a man searching for a place of perfection which as the book’s title implies (in Greek: Nowhere) does not exist.
