Marx’s undergraduate studies were in law; his doctoral studies in Philosophy, especially Hegel and Feuerbach. These inspired him to take up the cause of revolutionary communism, which became the term by which he is commonly identified. He anticipates nothing less than the transformation of human society driven by the engine of economic pressure to realise the achievement of personal and collective freedom. Both with and without financial assistance from his collaborator and friend Friedrich Engels, much of his own family life was on the bread-line. Academic and political interpreters vie over the extent to which there is a moral dimension to the process of development.
