MANN Thomas

  • Era: 1875 - 1955
  • Location: Germany
  • Categories: LITERATURE

Novelist and short story writer, with conservative cultural inclinations, he was greatly critical of the rise of Fascism in Italy and then that of Nazism, fleeing first to Switzerland and then the USA. The word he himself uses to characterise his life is ‘conscientious’. His literary output was held in continual high regard following his first book Buddenbrooks in 1898. Perhaps less apparent was the extent to which he drew on experiences within his immediate and extended family, including suicide, homosexuality and incest.
