MALINOWSKI, Bronislaw
- Era: 1884-1942
- Location: Poland United Kingdom
- Categories: SOCIAL SCIENCE
A ‘founding father’ of social anthropology, as characterised by intensive periods of participant observation and ethnographic recording. Much of his own field experience was in the Trobriand Islands in Australasia and in Mexico. On this he based his claim that social and cultural life takes its institutional form from meeting basic psychological needs as much as bodily ones. Reciprocity is a recurrent feature.
