MALCOLM X
- Era: 1925 - 1965
- Location: United States
- Categories: POLITICS, RELIGION
From a Nebraskan background in petty criminal activity, and whilst in prison Malcolm Little was converted to the Nation of Islam. Under the influence of the leadership of Elijah Muhammad he became a powerful advocate and front man for Black Civil Rights and abrasive critic of White arrogance and injustice. Any racist ingredients in his adopted version of Islam were exposed as false by a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1964. His embrace of mainstream Sunni Islam was at the root of his split from the Nation of Islam and his taking the name El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. His assassination the following year is contentiously attributed to distortions either of the white political establishment or of the Nation of Islam itself in retribution for his change of heart.
