Mahesh Yogi Maharishi was founder of the Transcendental Movement/ TM. From a Hindu kshratiyan caste background and after many years learning from his spiritual guru Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, he founded TM and the International Academy of Meditation in the late 1950s. The association with the Beatles raised their profile significantly and subsequently, centres were established throughout the world – both North and South America, Switzerland and Moscow. A notional link with moral education is evident from the claim that individual creativity and understanding is enhanced, along with social well being and health. Less sympathetic critics overlook his enormous wealth creation and simply characterise him as a ‘benign charlatan’.
