MACQUARRIE J

  • Era: 1919 - 2007
  • Location: United Kingdom
  • Categories: PHILOSOPHY, RELIGION

Scottish born Christian theologian, based successively in Glasgow, New York and Oxford universities. He systematically expounded the meaning of Christian beliefs and ethics in terms of an existential ontology, strongly influenced by Heideggerian philosophy. His writings range widely over twentieth century thought and are much regarded for their clarity of expression, a factor which contributed to their being widely translated, not least into Chinese and Japanese. His jointly edited New Dictionary of Christian Ethics remains an informative starting point for the interplay of religion and ethics
