Scottish born doctor and missionary who spent most of his working life in the countries of Central and Southern Africa as a travelling missionary, explorer. Along with a Christianity-inspired determination to alleviate human misery in all its forms, he set up community clinics and hospitals wherever he went. He also actively challenged the persistence of slavery as perpetuated under Portuguese sponsorship. His status as a moral exemplar has been challenged, but in effect by raising the question as to whether exemplarity presupposes perfection.
