Influential Christian ethicist and campaigner for human rights, from Ukrainian American family background and Presbyterian belonging. Influenced in student years by friendship with Dietrich Bonhoeffer and academic engagement with Karl Barth and Reinhold Niebuhr. In philosophical terms, his ethical stance is koinonia and communitarian based, qualifying the determinants confined only to an individual situation or to overridingly fixed principles. Politically, in the early 1950s he was founding chair of the Emergency Civil Liberties Committee set up to challenge McCarthyism.
