Best known for his enthusiasm for the interest of the Arab peoples in North Africa against those of the Turks and Ottoman Empire. He had an academic background and field experience in archaeology, and subsequent involvement in military intelligence and army and aerial warfare. In a series of books he conveys an authentic feel for life in the desert and the loyalties generated in that context. There is dispute regarding the extent to which he deserves the status as hero or self-propagandising deceiver.
