Born in South India, he was exposed through his father to the beliefs of the Theosophical Society, and identified by its leaders as the expected World Teacher – the Lord Maitreya. They sent him for education in England, where in 1922 he had an extended spiritual experience which persuaded him of his special status – independent of any religious organisation. Instead self-awareness bringing unconditional freedom from any previous ‘conditioning’ should be individually sought by everyone through meditation. Intellectual schooling should be replaced by deeper self-knowledge.
