Danish philosopher and prolific author, better known and more extensively influential in the century after his death than during his life. The solitariness and agonising which characterise his writings is sometimes attributed to the ‘pious gloom’ of his family background. ‘Existential angst’ gets reduced to neurotic ill health. There is no doubt however that he sought to express moral and religious authenticity in contrast to the superficiality of public conformity and appearance. Moral action and genuine faith have to be individually arrived at and willed.
