Leader of People’s Temple movement in the US from 1975 in California, relocating to Guyana in 1977 where the community ended in an act of collective suicide. For much of his life and teaching he was seen to stand for socialism and racial equality, both a charismatic healer and prophet. Latterly criticisms surfaced of mistreatment and child abuse. There is dispute regarding his state of health and mind, as also over the use of force in the deaths. Issues of political naivete, psychological delusion, freedom of belief, power of personality are all prominent here.
