Serious-minded writer who used his novels and critical essays as a means of exploring and depicting the best and worst of human future prospects, with such themes as survival of atomic war (Ape and Essence), drug enhancement (Doors of Perception and The Island), and most famously scientifically bred and controlled in a condition of moral anarchy (Brave New World). He suffered from a poor eye condition for much of his life, but this did not restrict the stretch of his imagination or the scope of his engagement with global sources of insight (Perennial Philosophy).
