Gifted painter, etcher and occasional essayist, especially prolific in his picturing of morality along the lines of Breughel and Durer. Keenly observed individual portraits, sometimes in series form served to convey a moral theme. These included: A Harlot’s Progress, A Rake’s Progress, Marriage a la mode, Industry and Idleness, and Gin Lane.
