American Indian chief and religious leader, much involved in attempts at reconciliation between Native Americans and Whites. He drew on religious beliefs of Shaker Christians and his own Turtle Clan. Following a near death experience involving alcohol excess, he declared a code for moral transformation centred on education, lawful behaviour and support for the poor.
