From an educational background and both rabbinic and psychoanalytic training in Germany, he emigrated as Nazism took hold. In university teaching, clinical practice and a succession of well-received books, he pursued the priority of maximising human freedom. That fulfilment entailed escape from false versions of being free – economic, emotional and political. Instead he sought a rounded version which he couched in terms of humanist ethics.
