FRANCIS. Pope (Jorge Mario Bergoglio)

  • Location: Argentina/Italy

Summary

The son of Italian immigrants, fleeing to Argentina to escape Mussolini, he was born in Buenos Aires with the family name Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Bilingual from early years, he was able to speak Italian, Spanish, English, Latin, German, French plus some Portuguese. On leaving school he worked as a science technician, building caretaker and security guard. He then took on some years of Jesuit education, which extended the range and depth of his learning – within Christian tradition and wider human scholarship. Within a decade he had moved from student to positions of Jesuit leadership within and beyond South America. He was elected as Pope and head of the Catholic Church in 2013 and served till his death in 2025. From the start his choice of name signalled the ‘humble’ style and readiness for dialogue associated with Francis of Assisi.
