Christian preacher and writer recognised as an outstanding Puritan theologian, with strong links to Yale (main education and conversion)and Princeton (cut short by death from a smallpox injection chosen to be an example to others). Leader of 'Great Awakening' revival through persuasive argument. Whilst stressing the importance of individual free will he asserted that any long term human satisfaction must come from beyond as a divine gift. The prospect of hellish torment is an important prompt for moral response.
