DICKENS, Charles
- Era: 1812 - 1870
- Location: England
- Categories: LITERATURE
Acute observer of human behaviour and the social conditions of living and working in Victorian Britain. These were based on direct personal experience of family poverty, unrewarding employment and subsequent journalism. All aspects of urban life were imaginatively and vividly recounted and conveyed in readily intelligible writing and dramatic retelling. In later life he travelled extensively in the US and continental Europe. He was hugely popular, widely respected and contributed powerfully to the raising of public consciousness and the building of a shared sense of responsibility.
