DARWIN, Charles
- Era: 1809 - 1882
- Location: England
- Categories: PHILOSOPHY
Author of Origin of Species and advocate of the theory of evolution through the process of natural selection. During and continuing on from his own historical context, the theory was and is in contention with versions of religious belief which follow a literal interpretation of a scriptural picture of creation. More fundamentally, it raises questions, which Darwin himself wrestled with, as to whether there can be any purposeful and humane order in life in the face of the extent of suffering intrinsic to nature. Though not coined by Darwin himself, the phrase 'survival of the fittest' has since been invoked in justification of certain approaches to economics and eugenics.
