CAITANYA

  • Era: 1486 - 1533
  • Location: India
  • Categories: RELIGION

Inspiration of the Caitanya sect, better known today as the Hare Krishna Movement or the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. He was born into a Bengali Hindu family. In preference to formal brahminical training he sought to emulate the life of Krishna in a more demonstrative and ascetic life-style, expressed in singing and dance. The ecstasy of his devotion (bhakti) to God proved attractive to followers then and since - they were sensed as engaging with the divine source of all creativity and play in life and expounded theologically as such by his contemporary disciple (Rupa Gosvami) and subsequent tradition.
