Peter Brueghel the Elder is the best known of a family dynasty of Flemish artists, astonishing for the range of vivid paintings of popular life and culture. A common theme amongst these is that of morality, for instance as exemplifying sayings and aphorisms, or virtues and deadly sins. Any moralism is tempered by his readiness to expose hypocrisy on the part of both rich and poor.
