Campaigning activist, pamphleteer and Member of Parliament. His best known cause was that of the freethinking atheist. This led him to become editor and proprietor of the National Reformer, founder of the National Secular Society and when elected MP to refuse to take of oath on the Bible. With Annie Besant he was prosecuted for publications commending birth control.
