BOWLBY, John

Outstanding figure in understanding of the development of attachment and loss in childhood and related theory. Drawing directly on his own childhood experience and subsequently on those of orphans, this became his lifelong interest. Much of his work was associated with the Tavistock Clinic in London; he also acted as a consultant to the World Health Organisation. Juvenile delinquency, separation and bereavement were of continuing concern to him. His debt to psychoanalytic thinking was amplified by his close observation of physical interaction, routine and ritual behaviour – the matrix of moral sense.
