Central figure in the 20th century development of the institutional face of secular humanism in the UK and Europe. He wrote extensively, combining erudition and clarity, on the tradition of humanist philosophy from classical Greece and Rome to modern existentialism. He was a founder of the International Humanist and Ethical Union in 1952 and subsequently the British Humanist Association. His enthusiasm for moral education is reflected in his long association with the Journal of Moral Education. It is an inclusive humanism; though rejecting of religious belief, it is yet ready to understand what is being affirmed by those who do not.
