Protestant (Presbyterian/Congregationalist) preacher, renowned for his proclamation of love and justice. This informed his personal temperance and public campaigning for the abolition of slavery, which were characterised by the common touch of wit and dramatic gesture. His liberal theological views were visible in his beliefs that evolution and theistic belief are compatible and in his willingness to support the deployment of rifles in favour of the abolitionist cause. They may also have been implicit in his extra-marital relationships, but there was an evident tension between his affirmation of women’s liberation and an expectation of confidentiality.
