BECKET, Thomas à
- Era: 1118 - 1170
- Location: England
- Categories: POLITICS, RELIGION
Sainted hero within Anglo-Catholic tradition who was killed for his loyalty to church above the state. Following his shift from courtly political status to that of priest and archbishop he articulated the precedence of theological authority over that of royalty. The clash is evidenced in contemporary correspondence as well as more recent dramatization by Tennyson, Eliot and Anouilh.
