BATESON, Gregory
- Era: 1904 - 80
- Location: England + United States (from 1
- Categories: SOCIAL SCIENCE
Bateson’s early academic work was based in Cambridge UK. His extensive anthropological field work in New Guinea and Bali (latterly with first wife Margaret Mead) provided the observational basis for his theories of binary aspects of human personality, both symmetrical (equal) and complementarily oppressive/ submissive.
Following his move to California, he set out to develop a theory of the ecology of mind which chimed in with systems theory and the emerging cybernetics. The interrelation of mind and body is part of a complex ecological whole, which has to be grasped to be understood.
