BARKER, Ernest

 

English social and political philosopher, writing prolifically from professorial positions in London, Cambridge and Cologne. His studies extended from Graeco-Roman, through medieval to modern thinkers and focussed on such themes as natural law, religion and politics, and the emergence of democracy. He was equally in command of ‘the grand perspective’ as of particular historical detail as in the instance of the role of 13th century Dominican friars in developing a model of democratic order and representational convocation
