Proponent of experimental psychology based on systematic observation of children's development. He drew on insights from evolutionary biology as well as philosophy and social theory. Thus he asserted an interactivity between the givens of collective and individual genetic inheritance and individual intention. His academic bases included Germany and France as well as Canada and the US. He was the originating editor of Psychological Review and collated the huge Dictionary of Philosophy and Psychology (1906).
