BADEN-POWELL, Robert
- Era: 1857 - 1941
- Location: United Kingdom
- Categories: CURRICULUM
Active in army service for over 30 years, serving in India, Afghanistan, and Africa. He founded the Boy Scouts in 1908, and with Agnes his sister the Girl Guides in 1910, then for younger children the Wolf Cubs in 1916. These organisations have been major vehicles in 'character building' and moral education, in countries of the former British Commonwealth and beyond. The commended life-style included a strong sense of duty and self-discipline, creative activity and energetic play in company with others. Criticisms - some true, some exaggerated and others false - are reminders that moral ambiguity is a common feature of the human condition, even within exemplars.
