Child of Hindu Dalit (untouchable) caste family background. Post-graduate studies in economics at Columbia in USA and LSE in London - where he also studied Law. Subsequently he practised as lawyer and politician in India campaigning for the rights of untouchables. He was a major contributor to writing of 1947 Constitution of Independent India. Increasing frustration with his fellow Hindus led him in later life to encourage his fellow caste members to convert to Buddhism. It is claimed that there are more statues of him in India than there are of either Gandhi or Nehru.
