AKBAR THE GREAT

  • Era: 1542-1605
  • Location: Pakistan
  • Categories: POLITICS, RELIGION

One of the best known of all the Mogul/Mughal emperors extending their boundaries from S India to Afghanistan, with diplomatic links extending even to Elizabethan England. He was a powerful military leader and political administrator, enthusiastic to promote access to learning by the creation of huge libraries in Agra and Delhi. He interpreted his Muslim faith in a comprehensive way to include Hindus, Christians, Jains and Parsis, with the effect that it risked becoming a new religion with himself as a prophetic leader. His relevance for moral education lies in his insistence that generosity of spirit, sexual fidelity, and protection of animals are direct corollaries of belief in God.
