Moral Contours
Historical figures
Outstanding 20th century African leader. Initially a teacher and lifelong educator and translator (including Shakespeare plays into Swahili and selected books of the New Testament ), he brought together his native Tanganyika with Zanzibar to form the independent nation of Tanzania in 1964. On moral grounds he favoured a socialist approach to economics, including the collectivisation of farming under the slogan of ujamaa – extended family. In spite of the unintended consequences of relative poverty which followed he remained a popular president until his decision not to stand again for re-election. Standards of education and health had been universally improved. Beyond Tanzania he sought to promote collaboration between African countries, a positive outcome of which was the expulsion of Idi Amin from Uganda. The extent to which he fairly managed the tribal and inter-religious (Christian-Muslim) tensions in his own life and political judgements is contested.
